Most leaders think their team is underperforming because of lack of skill, motivation, or accountability.
But here’s what I’ve seen after coaching hundreds of high-performing founders and execs:
Your team responds more to your nervous system than your instructions.
If you walk into a room dysregulated—stressed, tense, on edge—your team feels it.
Even if your words sound calm.
They’ll hold back.
They’ll avoid risk.
They’ll mirror your energy.
Because people aren’t just listening to what you say.
They’re scanning for safety.
Leadership isn’t about managing people.
It’s about managing the emotional signal you’re sending—consciously or not.
Here’s the reality most leaders overlook: Your team’s performance is a direct reflection of your emotional tone.
If you show up grounded and regulated, your team feels the freedom to perform.
But if you show up chaotic, reactive, or intense? They go into defense mode. Creativity tanks. Trust erodes. Execution slows.
A regulated leader creates a regulated team.
You don’t need to “fix” your team.
You need to reset what your own system is broadcasting.
When your presence feels calm, clear, and grounded… people rise.
Because nervous systems sync. And yours is the one they’re reading.

Great article! I love your feed and would love to collaborate on some writing.
I completely agree! I always felt when I was leading a team I had to emotionally prepare each day with my growth routine. I would meditate, journal, reflect, practice gratitude and workout. It helped me gain clarity to be able to show up as a leader that they could count on to guide them towards our vision. Great article! Thanks for sharing
